Vintage FBW C40U Alpenwagen.

Back in the day, this unique bus was nicknamed ‘Haifisch’, because of its Sharklike front.
Build in Switzerland in 1958, by FBW.
The craftsmanship and high quality standards at FBW were truly amazing and that isn’t hard to spot in this Haifisch: The tight, T1 samba-like design, with beautiful panorama roof. The tasteful detailing and innovative solutions like the EDU underfloor engine, sliding benches, suicide doors etc.

A little bit of history;

This Alpine touringcar/postal bus has been in action in the Swiss Alps from 1958 until 1989, during which time it always received proper maintenance in Switzerland. Since 1989 this particular bus has been stationed in Holland, where it has been part of ‘Hofstra Travels’ special collection of classic Saurer and FBW busses. Well maintained by Hofstra’s mechanics and occasionally put to work as a touring car for special occasions like weddings and special tours.

When in 2017 all Hofstra’s busses we’re sold, we managed to get hold of this Haifisch.
Along came a long list of maintenance reports and documentation dating from 1957.

Except for the color, the bus is in complete original condition. I haven’t been able to find out when it got it’s new coating of soft green-grey. We always quite liked the color, but when it still drove around the Swiss Alps its color was “postal yellow”. Recently the bus received a new layer of protection, which is visible in the photo’s.
The bus is still in pretty neat condition, has nicely fitting bodywork, free of rust, which is largely made of aluminium.
The engine is running well, even though a thorough technical check would be advisory.

Seats:
1 bench beside the driver, 8 rows of benches behind the driver and a large 4-5 person backseat.
All seats are still there and completely original. During it’s working years, some of the seats upholstery was renewed, that is why there are two types. Because they are really quit old, they do need work.
All the double seats have a sliding system, which can move the benches slightly towards the aisle, so passengers would have a little more room whilst driving.
